Work Accident Statistics

It is difficult to track down global up to date work accident statistics, but I did wish to refer to some that I spotted on Wikipedia in regards to the United States over the year of 2007. These shocking figures showed that 5488 workers died from job injuries and 49,000 died from work-related injuries (I would assume that this includes road traffic accidents to and from work). The non-fatal work related injuries or illnesses was estimated in that year at four million, which provides an idea of just how large the personal claims industry is and that is of course only specific to the United States. Obviously there would be a vast difference between the number of workers that claim and the number that choose not to, but it is clear that there are more claims being made than ever before.

Focusing on the non-fatal injuries or illness 2007 estimation in the United States of four million, this would equate to around 11,000 per day. You would expect the daily number here in the UK to be in the hundreds! There is certainly a problem here in the UK, but many accident workers are concerned about the legal process being expensive and if they continue to work for their employer then they worry about the repercussions of making such a claim. This is not the case though, thanks to no win, no fee solicitors and threatening employers can be heavily fined or even jailed and their insurance covers the compensation! Fortunately, more people are becoming fully aware of their rights and are receiving the compensation that they truly deserve.

Update: The recent posting (HSE’s Work Accident Statistics | Work Injury Statistics) helps to provide an accurate standing of work accident statistics here in the UK with thanks to detailed information provided by The Health and Safety Executive.
